Our Employment Counsellors are professionally trained and are committed to ensuring that clients get the assistance they need, employing a collaborative, client-centred approach. Individuals uncertain of their most suitable career direction can be assisted by completing personal profiles to identify career areas most likely to provide work satisfaction.


Counselling Services Include

  • Assistance with identifying and resolving barriers to employment
  • Assessment of needs
  • Assessment of transferable skills
  • Assistance developing Return-to-Work Action Plans
  • Coaching to achieve goals set out in Return-to-Work Action Plans
  • Referrals to appropriate support services
  • Assistance with resume and cover letter preparation
  • Assistance accessing the Internet for work search and labour market information
  • Assistance with preparing financial documentation to access funding resources for training
  • Provide personal coaching to increase work search and interview skills


Workshops

Programs and Services Information Session
This session provides the unemployed with information on resources available.

Resumé / Cover Letter Workshop
This workshop provides up-to-date information on compiling a resumé and cover letter. You will learn how to produce a functional resumé and cover letter.

Introduction to the Computer for Work Search
This workshop provides the basic skills too operate a computer, function within the Windows operating system and access basic computer programs to assist with job search activities.

Other Workshops Available
Workshops based on identified community needs are also developed and offered as required.

Job Postings
Local job postings are compiled and updated as they come in. They are on this web site, hung on the job board in the office, and available in print form to take with you.

Services for Employers
To best assist our job-seeking clientele we offer free job postings for employers. The employer can access the job postings form on the web site or at our office.


The VIEW (Value in Experienced Workers)
Funded by Service Canada and the Province of British Columbia

Applicants accepted into this program undertake a 12-week process. The VIEW is a 50-hr/week commitment for which the individual receives income support while going through the process of gaining assessment, skills and training to return to the workplace. The program can include certification programs (Food Safe, WHMIS, First Aid, etc.). Qualification and referral is required in order to make application. This Program is for individuals aged 50 and over who wish to enter or return to the work place.

Community Access Program

Assisting individuals and families with skills to enhance quality of life and participation in their communities. Services are offered free of charge.

  • Achieve increased involvement in the community;
  • Achieve an increased peer support network;
  • Adopt and commit to a healthier lifestyle;
  • Enroll in education or training, as appropriate;
  • Improve your personal budgeting ability;
  • Develop skills that contribute to stronger family relationships, such as the return of a child to a family, or reconnecting with family members;
  • In general, assist you in skills that will enhance your quality of life and help you participate more fully in your community.

Services are flexible and tailored to best address individual needs. One-on-one counselling and/or group sessions and/or referrals are available for: Money Management, Nutrition, Parenting, Anger Management, Stress Management, Communication Skills, Relationship building, Personal Hygiene, Vision Planning / Goal-Setting, Recognizing Abuse, Self-esteem building, Self-care / Personal Safety.

The above topics are core life skills which, when learned and practiced, can make a healthy change to a challenging situation.

Targeted Wage Subsidy
Funded by Service Canada

The Wage Subsidy Program assists individuals in securing long-term employment by supporting direct work experience. HVI can negotiate an agreement with an employer that will subsidize part of the new employee's wages. Eligible participants in the Wage Subsidy Program normally have a proven work history and are interested in learning new skills while securing long-term employment.
Note: Wage subsidy agreements must be in place before a participant starts work.

Eligibility of Employee:
You must be EI eligible (you do not have to have an active claim; you may qualify under "reachback" status).
You must be referred by a Service Canada authorized employment counsellor and have a completed Return-to-Work Action Plan.
You must have an up-to-date resume and be "job ready."

Eligibility of Employer:

  1. You must have up-to-date WCB coverage and be in compliance with WCB.
  2. You must be willing to provide full time employment
  3. You must have been in business for more than one year
